Stopping School RacismRacial attitudes are often adopted by children who see these attitudes in the adults surrounding them. As parents, teachers, and other authority figures we have a strong influence on the children we come into contact with on a daily basis, and we need to be aware of these racism issues. We also have a responsibility to promote positive attitudes that encourage cultural diversity in our environment, reducing the effect of school racism in our education system. As adult leaders we can build tolerance in children through various methods. By practicing what we are teaching to the children in our midst we set one of the greatest examples possible. Children who learn tolerance at a young age are more likely to adopt positive attitudes towards those around them. This can result in their positive influence to help stop racism in the workplace and other areas as adults. The earlier we begin this important education, the better. Children look to those around them to teach them the ways of right and wrong. As adults we can set examples that will last a lifetime and by working together we can change the course of how racism has affected our society for future generations. All of these factors contribute to differences we have with those around us. We may lean toward those whose backgrounds are similar to ours or we may be intrigued by those who grew up in a completely different environment. No matter where we were raised or who our influences were, each of us grows up with a set of ideals that we either choose to abide by or dismiss as adults. The influence of adults and peers against school racism does not guarantee that we will grow up with the same principles.
